For Volunteers
Read for the league. Earn Bright Futures hours.
Match nights need volunteer readers and scorekeepers. Year 1 recruits primarily from Maclay students, since all matches are at Maclay. The league issues signed service-hour letters on letterhead at season's end.
What the role involves
On match nights, two volunteers staff each room: one reader and one scorekeeper. The reader asks questions from the supplied packet and adjudicates buzzes. The scorekeeper records tossup and bonus results on the official scoresheet. Each match runs roughly 35 to 45 minutes, and most volunteers staff two matches per night.
A central judging committee handles protests and close calls. Student volunteers are not on the hook for hard rulings.
Bright Futures service hours
Florida Bright Futures requires 100 hours of service for the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award and 75 hours for the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) award. A regular match night earns two to three hours, depending on the matches staffed. Across a season, a consistent volunteer can earn 30 to 50 hours.
At season's end, the league issues a signed letter on Leon County Academic League letterhead listing match nights worked and total verified hours. The letter is suitable for the FAS or FMS application record.
How to sign up
Year 1 recruits volunteer readers and scorekeepers primarily from Maclay students, since all inaugural-season matches take place at Maclay. A short orientation runs in early September. In later years, as matches expand to multiple venues, the volunteer base will widen across all member schools.
Interested students at Maclay can express interest now. The league will follow up with orientation details before the season begins.
